Why Deep Condition Natural Hair?

Deep conditioning is what it sounds like, it is giving your hair a deeper conditioning than any leave-in or regular conditioning. Here are a few benefits from deep conditioning.

  •  It helps prevent breakage and helps in repairing damaged dry hair
  • Adds more moisture to your natural hair which will give you healthier looking hair
  • Adds shine, luster and helps with hairs elasticity
  • Helps improve the health of your hair and scalp for healthy hair growth
  • Deep conditioning restores hairs PH balance

It is important to know what your hair needs from a deep conditioning to make the best choice on which products to use on your natural hair. Always use Paraben-Free products on your hair because products with Parabens have the ability to mimic estrogen and potentially cause breast cancer. Research has found that parabens may cause considerable damage to hair and scalp, just to name a few. You also want to use salon quality products on your hair, this is very important because salon quality products contain special herbs, oils, and vitamins that will either not be in most brands or at a much lower level of concentration.

How To Deep Condition Your Natural Hair?

Before you deep condition your hair you always and I mean ALWAYS want to start with clean hair. Always shampoo your hair before you deep condition.

Shampoo before Deep Conditioning

This will ensure all product buildup is removed from your hair. This step will fully prepare your hair to receive the moisture from the conditioner. To get the best out of your deep conditioning there are a couple of things to consider.

You want to choose the best conditioner for your hair type.

Once you have chosen your products, you need to pick the best time for your schedule. A good healthy hair regimen is to deep condition your hair twice a month then every 2 weeks after that.  By doing this you will give your hair enough time to build up your own natural oils.  Most naturals who follow this regimen see better results to the overall health of their hair.

Let it be easy. Working with your lifestyle will make adding this to your hair care regimen doable, so set aside time for self-care.

How Long Should You Deep Condition Your Hair?

You should deep condition your hair at least 30 to 45 min. This allows for the products to penetrate and set into your hair. Some people choose to deep condition overnight. Some have made it an “event” by deep conditioning and listening to there favorite CD. Whatever you choose, make it work for you.

Deep Condition Your Hair for 30-45 minutes

How Do I Apply Deep Conditioner?

You start by applying the conditioner to your ends first then work your way to your scalp. This will detangle your ends first. Your ends are the driest part of your hair so you want to start there first. Next work in the conditioner from tips to roots while detangling as you go. Massage your scalp to encourage blood circulation in your scalp. A highly concentrated conditioner will help you easily detangle your hair and provide you with maximum coverage for your hair without having to use the whole bottle!

Massage the conditioner into your hair and scalp. Cover with a plastic cap and, if you have a dryer or heat cap sit under it for at least 30 min.

Can I Add Oil To My Conditioner?

If you are suffering from really dry hair and scalp add some oil to your conditioner. Put a plastic cap on for at least 30 min. Sit under heat with a plastic cap on for 30 min. This will do wonders for your hair because the not only are you adding an extra boost of moisture to your hair your getting rid of dry scalp and encouraging healthy hair growth.

Rinsing After Your Deep Conditioning

After you have given your hair some much-needed love, make sure you remove the deep conditioner the right way. When you deep condition your hair you infuse your hair strands with nutrients for maximum nourishment and health.

You want to rinse your hair with COOL Water! This will close your natural hairs pores and help the nutrients and moisture to stays locked in.

Can I DIY my own Deep Conditioner?

Today people are using a lot of things in their kitchen pantry and putting it on their hair.  This may not be the best way of obtaining healthy natural hair. Applying cooking Olive Oil, cooking Coconut Oil, and other cooking oils on your hair will not give you healthy natural hair. Read more about using cooking oil on your hair CLICK HERE.

For starters, once your hair grows out of your scalp it’s “dead” meaning it cannot Ph balance itself as our skin can. Coconut oil penetrates into your hair shaft and disguises itself as “fixed”. What your hair is thirsty for is amino acids. Your red blood cells deliver nutrients to your hair follicles and in turn stimulate healthy hair growth.

So using cooking oils on your hair that isn’t PH balanced for hair can cause protein buildup. This can block your hair from the much-needed moisture that your own scalp produces for healthy hair growth. It can cause your hair to be drier with less elasticity than it was in the beginning. Your natural hair having less elasticity can lead to more breakage and shedding.

Note: When any cooking oil is heated to the point where it smokes it breaks down and produces potentially carcinogenic toxins.

Do You Use Conditioner After Deep Conditioning?

Absolutely! This is a common question people ask about deep conditioning their natural hair. After rinsing your hair you should always use a leave-in spray on conditioner by doing this you are ensuring that your hair has been Ph balanced. Depending on where you live your waters Ph Levels could be too high. This could throw off your hair’s Ph balance. Normal hair and scalp sebum have a Ph of 4.5 -5.5.  This level prevents bacteria and fungi in your hair and scalp. This also keeps your cuticle closed and nice and healthy. So if you can, test your water at home.
